Just purchased a copy of this book, which I originally had back in the mid 1970s and retained vivid memories of reading the four vampire stories included in the final section sat by the window of my room while the snow drifted down hour after hour and piled up on the green opposite our house.
Seen through adult eyes, it's a load of old tosh really. Accounts of 'real' vampires are trotted out with absolutely no sources quoted, just 'it seems'...'it appears'...'it is said'...etc or 'I spoke to a noted Hungarian author and doctor of philosphy who told me belief in vampires was very strong during his youth', or 'evidence suggests...' Recounting a supposed staking of an uncorrupted corpse, which 'reportedly' occurred two centuries ago, the author writes 'in the uncertain light, the eyelids seemed to flicker'. Another chapter begins 'In (something) castle, that fine old 14th century ruin built by Lord (somebody)....' Anyway, I hope the 'fiction' part of the book is worthwhile.
