There's an interview with Reece Shearsmith in Radio Times this week ( the puff piece at the back of the mag where they ask a current tv face what they're watching on telly, whether they've got a big sofa in their viewing room, etc), and it ties in with the new series of Inside No. 9 which kicks off on Monday. I'll be particularly interested as the first episode concerns a referee/linesmen team in a football changing room - Steve Hardy and I have included a not dissimilar idea in the anthology script we've recently completed, so I'm hoping we don't have to ditch our work! Great to see the show back, and there's already murmurs about another series too, if Reece's comments are anything to judge by.

As another memorable series draws to a close tonight the BBC have confirmed that they've ordered two further series of IN9: https://www.bbc.co.uk/mediacentre/latestnews/2020/series-six-and-seven-of-inside-no-9
I have no idea how they keep generating so many ideas while keeping up such a high standard but long may it continue. The BBC Sounds podcast Inside Inside No. 9 is well worth a listen as well.
I haven't seen any of this series so far, but am hoping to catch up on the iPlayer before too long. Can't say I'm too enthused about a football episode but I'm sure Pembersmith will be able to make something out of it. Variety is certainly this show's greatest strength and this is certainly uncharted territory! I stumbled upon a spoiler for the 2nd episode which said that>>> SPOILERS!! >>> it's a treat for Psychoville fans, so I'm looking forward to that one!
I liked the mascot
I've not seen it yet, but the football factor isn't a big pull for me. I'd rather watch flies breathe than watch football. But I'm guessing they've put a clever spin on it. :)
Well there are references to and gags about several real football personalities, so possibly. This will work for non-footie people but it does help to have a knowledge of certain aspects of the modern game, on and off the pitch.
If we ever get 'Compendium of Shudders' off the ground, our football-themed episode in that is a bit more basic and accessible. And connects with the linking material, Lombot-style!! It's not as good as 'The Referee's a Wanker' though.
I'm not a soccer fan and my interest in the game was limited to getting a subscription to Shoot! magazine as a kid (because you had to in those days or risk ostracism from the school playground) and seeing St Albans City (my then place of residence) play Walthamstow Avenue (now defeunct) one blustery evening at Clarence Park. I'm totally at a loss when watching spoofs of players / managers so often featured on Harry Enfield and The Fast Show, so maybe this'll go over my head.
Very good, solid start to the series (though shouldn't that caption have read '4.52 pm', not 5.42?) (Writes a football pedant). Unless it was supposed to suggest that there had been several brawls and delays during the second half. The ending was telegraphed so much that I'm surprised not to have guessed it. Beautifully-written characters, and if the dialogue relied on footie and homophobic cliches, that was probably rather accurate in both cases. The 'San Siro' thing was handled very well.
The Referee's a W****er made me laugh out loud several times. I'll need to watch it again to understand the exact sequence of results that was required for the ending but it's never a chore to re-watch this series. We're really lucky to have Reece and Steve writing several of these little classics every year.
I wonder if there'll be any Dracula in-jokes?
Oooh, thanks for the heads up! I've been wondering when this would be on.
