Inspired by talk elsewhere of the 50th (fiftieth!) anniversary of its release I decided to dig out the BD of this film. I've always been a fan of this one, and not just because of its impact on my formative years. It has a lovely atmosphere, thanks to excellent production design and music, as well as classy performances, including a career best Ingrid Pitt. It's really pretty faithful to LeFanu and it treats the lesbian element with some sensitivity, Pitt successfully conveying the difference between the tragic love story with Maddie Smith and her predation on other characters.
