Yes, this is me on the 2010s thread, which is a looooong time after I was born. I've told you all until you were blue in the face that I've never seen any films made after 1979. Well, yesterday I inadvertantly broke that unwritten "law" (?) and - because it was "on the telly" and I was "sitting comfortably in the armchair with wine" I watched this. Normally I'd have gone to bed to watch something older for the umpteenth time, but due to the fact that this was British I decided to do my duty, lie back and think of England.
I have, as you will realise, absolutely no frame of reference here, so it's just a kind of "liked/didn't like" rambling rabbit. Not even that, it's a kind of dying rabbit crawl (this post, not the film). I don't know what the film's about. Some friends (gays, lezzers, transformers, travesties, fat people) go to a big house in the country for Christmas. The bit I liked was when they got pished and danced around in their underwear. That was really funny and British and reminded me of parts of "Inside Number 9" (some of which I have somehow seen), really non-Hollywood due to the amount of normally-bodied people flaunting it. It also reminded me of some Hogmanay parties of yore.
Then it kind of turns into a "horror" film with jump scares and a sort of monster that appears for some reason I didn't quite get. Needless to say I lost interest and ended up with my eyes open in front of the screen but my brain in the jug of wine.
Anyone out there? I mean, anyone out there seen this shit?
I saw this last May. Here's what I wrote then:
Christmas Presence (aka Why Hide? , 2018)
Six friends rent a large, isolated country house in which to spend Christmas together. One by one they are killed by a supernatural entity which uses their deepest fears against them.
A well-worn horror film scenario then, but worth a watch. The friends are a refreshingly diverse and believable bunch (within the constraints of genre clichés), the supernatural predator looks suitably horrific, the pace is well maintained and the script even serves up a few double bluffs along the way to a semi-surprise ending.
