Borderline horror perhaps. Imdb lists it as crime/mystery but this Edgar Wallace adaptation does offer a "ghostly" monk, thunderstorms and a cackling maniac who likes to play the organ. The search for hidden loot very much takes a backseat to the Gothic trappings. This version has a very fine cast, including the likes of Arthur Wontner and, as one of the crooks, Alastair Sim who gets a fairly spooky re-entrance scene late on.

I recall it as being overly talky and generally dull. And isn't there an annoying woman who's into spiritualism?
