Inspired by talk elsewhere of the 50th (fiftieth!) anniversary of its release I decided to dig out the BD of this film. I've always been a fan of this one, and not just because of its impact on my formative years. It has a lovely atmosphere, thanks to excellent production design and music, as well as classy performances, including a career best Ingrid Pitt. It's really pretty faithful to LeFanu and it treats the lesbian element with some sensitivity, Pitt successfully conveying the difference between the tragic love story with Maddie Smith and her predation on other characters.

Good call. Liked it for many of the wrong (or probably right) reasons when I was a young teen, didn't bother with it for a long while and was very pleased to rediscover it and find a lot more to like.
In some respects, it's a bit of a shame it's often viewed as saucy lesbian T&A fest when, as you say, it has Pitt on never-better form giving quite a bit of emotional heft to Camilla and it remains largely faithful. That said, the T&A really doesn't hurt any.
